General Meeting

 

September 3, 2008

 

Call to Order

Phil Hart, President, called the meeting to order at 8:30 am.

 

Quorum

Jack Chittick reported for Gerry Lane that there were 87 members present representing a quorum.

 

Minutes from previous meeting

Rodger Page, Secretary, and Phil Hart noted several highlights of the previous meeting, August 6th.  The minutes were approved as submitted.

 

Treasurers Report

Don Hug, Treasurer reported that the balance for all bank accounts was $11,430.78. Don also commented on several income/expense items. The TreasurerÕs Report was approved.

 

Golf Course

Jim Ferrin, G.C Superintendent, reported on work in several areas:

A.  New reclaimed water is creating a problem of algae bloom due to high temp of water.

B.   Work by Troy and staff on common area landscape.  Work on satellite irrigation system.

C.    Arification of Pines went very well. Arification of TC will be done September 29th and 30th.

D. Over seeding being done this fall.

E.   There has been an increase in mosquitoes due to the rice fields being dried out prior to harvest. 

F.    Geese are migrating between Woodcreek and Timber Creek.  Goose patrol is in full force.  CanÕt shoot them yet.

G.   Top dressing of #17 and #18 to improve conditions.

H.  Work this fall to improve sand in bunkers.

I.    Yardage markers are now on hand and Jim expects to have the maintenance folkÕs start adding them to the sprinkler heads soon.

J.    #11 and #12 greens continue to be worked on.  (It was stated that the temporary rule allowing moving of the ball away from damaged areas is rescinded.  Play it as it lies).

Question 1:  Dry spots, soil conditions?  Jim has a new core arifier that he will use this winter to arify the fairways.  1st time in several years that this will be done.

Question 2:  Condition of bunkers.  Jim hopes to start renovation of more bunkers this fall. Question 3:  Skunks Yes we are now seeing damage from skunks. A trapper has been called (he is on vacation) Trapping should commence when he returns.

Jim and Troy were thanked by the members for the work they are doing on our golf courses.

Proshop

Mark Gouger, Head Golf Professional, commented on the refurbishment of the shop to enhance appearance and business, and noted that he was very pleased with the work that had been done by Kent and his people.  There is a Re- Grand Opening sale going on for the month of September.  Mark also commented on the 1st Tee Championship September 13th.  There is a wait list of some 50 kids that would like to play.

Mark also commented on the ÒRose CupÓ to be played at Sierra View and Diamond Oaks, November 7th and 8th.  Qualification for the Timber Creek team will be September 9th.  Cost to play after qualification is $85.00.

Mark also requested that players using the driving range leave baskets and unused balls on the range.

Mark was given a nice Thank You from the members and he and the staff appreciate that.

    

Committee Reports

      Travel Events:  Dick Gilberg announced that the Òlast HurrahÕ the final event of the       year will be at Turkey Creek, September 29th.  There will be several innovations in this            tournament to spice it up.

            NCGA Tournaments: Bill Aaberg summarized the NCGA tournaments in 2008:

            EAST SACRAMENTO ZONE:   four 2-man teams to qualify for 2 teams.       Krause, Whitney, Allison and Mastrantonio represented Sun City at Spyglass

            SENIOR NET:   nine players to qualify for 2 spots.  Wolf and McHugh played in             regional at Castle Oaks.  Martin qualified for Championship at Poppy Hills.

            SENIOR FOUR-BALL:  four 2-man teams for 2 spots.  Teams of Knight-            McHugh and Lick-Yorston played at regional at Teal Bend.  Neither team             qualified for Championship.

      Handicaps:  Paul Wilmoth reported that a member of the committee, Don Strunk who            had 5 way by pass surgery is doing well and expects to be back on the job soon. 

      Rules:  Dick Mann, Rules Chair, reported on a number of items:
                  A.   The Temporary Rule for Oaks greens #11 and #12 is lifted.  Play the ball down.
                  B.   Troy Thompson, Maintenance Supervisor requests that rakes be left in the bunkers.
                  C.  #18, the pile of rocks in the waste area on the right side of the fairway indicates a drain area.  Free relief.  No penalty.
                  D.  Dick emphasized that players are not to hit out of the flower beds. Irrigation systems can be badly damaged.  Free relief, without penalty, is provided and described by appropriate local rules.  The Drop Area on Lakes #3 is ONLY for a ball in the flower bed. (Lateral Hazard rules apply to a ball in the water)
                  E.  Due to frequent wet conditions in the roughs, the Embedded Ball rule has
been amended to apply "Through the Green" for the balance of the summer rules.
                  F.  Relief procedures for a ball "embedded" in an Abnormal Ground Condition, but becomes lost in the condition, are described in a Local Rule.

      Membership:  Jack Chittick noted that October is the beginning of the renewal period for membership.  Important to get your renewal in with address and email address changes. We now have 385 members.

      RAMP:  Joe Lavette, Chair noted that RAMP will continue this month. 

      Tournaments: Martin Wolf, Chair, discussed N/S tournament that we had 120 players, the most of any tournament this year, and the South won. In September we will have    our member/guest on the 12th and the Annual Autumn Leaves on the 25th. 

            Golf Committee:   Martin Wolf, Chair, reported that their meeting would be in the afternoon, that there were 6 new members on the committee.  Items to be discussed would be the trash removal on the right side of #2 and the removal of pampas grass on #7.

Old Business

Phil Hart reported on the Sun City Cup with Lincoln Hills.  Timber Creek won and it was a great day.  The Trophy will be engraved and will be in the Trophy case in the bar area of the lodge.

            Rodger Page commented on the 1st Tee Championship the 13th and that we were still in need of a few volunteers.

New Business: 

Vice President, Roy Lloyd reported that the Holiday Party is scheduled for December 3rd with 11ty (RoyÕs word) door prizes and fun for all. The annual skills challenge will follow breakfast.

Phil reported that he had appointed the nominating committee for officers for the ensuing year.  Members are Ed Lick, chair, Ed Steele, Joe Lavette, and Steve Rodriguez.  The committee is to report a slate of officers at the October meeting.  In November, the slate will be nominated and nominations may be made from the floor.  Following nomination, the election will be held, and the new officers will take over at the December Meeting.

 

Door Prizes:  Several door prizes were given out.  The $25.00 gift card was won by Ron Bayless
