Golf Course

Jim Ferrin, G.C Superintendent, reported on work in several areas: This time of year, work is concentrated on trying to keep up with the hot dry conditions, salt accumulations, algae in the ponds etc. In response to a question regarding cut backs on some local GCs we are in a favorable position with the support of our community. GC staff continues to work on ways to improve sand bunkers.

Proshop

Mark Gouger, Head Golf Professional, commented that Timber Creek is probably the finest conditioned golf course in the Sacramento Area. He noted that golf passes are on sale with a “Stimulus Package” of various additions to stimulate interest in pass sales. He is trying to concentrate on the “core” golfer for play, both resident and non resident in marketing the GC by adding a meal, breakfast or lunch with a rack rate fee.

He has a new reservation system in place which will be able to increase the use of tee time spot openings.

Mark noted that the weekly “sweeps” would be a skins game each week. That seems to be the most popular.

Several sales are in effect from apparel to equipment.

Mark also mentioned the 3rd Annual 1st Tee Scholarship Tournament Friday July 17th.

Bill noted that we would be trying something new this year by seeking volunteers to serve as rules officials. There will be a training seminar August 24th for those interested. Bill also commented on the Tournament Director Angie Dixon, who started playing golf as a kid in the 1st Tee program

Rules: Tom Devitt reported on a question regarding a ball already holed, and a second ball is then holed on top of it, is there a penalty? No.

He also commented on taking relief. Relief is taken to the nearest point of relief. Relief is taken with the club you are intending to use. Then the club length from there may be any club. The ball is then dropped no nearer to the hole.

A question was asked regarding the crushed granite at the edges of the cart paths on #13 and if free relief might be taken? No.

Tom noted that OB stakes are inside the golf course and a ball is out of bounds if the entire ball is out side the line between the stakes. Conversely, red or yellow stakes are inside the hazard and if the ball touches the line between two stakes or the stake, it is in the hazard.
