Minutes from previous meeting

The minutes of the meeting of February 3, 2010 were approved as submitted.

Golf Course

Jim Ferrin, GC Superintendent, reported several items as follows:

New sprinkler control system complete, will allow control of 99% of sprinklers to be individually controlled; Programming of individual heads is underway.

Arification schedule has been moved up one week to March 22, 23, and 24th.

Bent grass on greens program doing well.

Jim gave much thanks and praise to his staff for the work that they are doing and the quality of work.  He believes that we are well on the way to the next level in GC conditions.

Continue to study and watch the health and condition of the Red Wood trees.  Will wait until spring and good weather before making a decision.

A question was raised as to placing almond shells around the Oaks.  They are cheap, easy to maintain and do give a good cover to the oak tree root system.  No problem with driving over them.  Question was asked in regard to the water level in the ponds and the hazard stakes/boundaries.  Referred to rules committee.  See below.

Pro Shop

Mark Gouger, Head Golf Professional, thanked Jim and his staff for the tremendous condition that our GC is in.  Mark then commented on the ongoing 15% discount on soft and hard goods; new equipment coming in March, Mizuno, Callaway, Taylor Made, Cobra.  March will be the annual March Madness Sale with many discounts on equipment, shoes, balls, shirts etc.  Mark discussed the 2010 3 day Golf Academies coming in March and then throughout the year.  He also noted that “this is the year of the wedge” the last year that wedges will be made with square grooves and play with these will end in 2024, which was met with extreme concern.  Mark noted that the AAU Senior Games are now officially the National AAU Senior Games.

Treasurers Report

Committee Reports

Cut off will be Friday March 5th.  He also commented on the 4th Tuesday Individual Low Net Tournament, noting that there are Gold and Blue flights and if enough players, there would be flights within flights.

Championship at Poppy Hills June 7th

Sign ups are being taken and he will assign Tee times and pairings.

Rules:

Tom Devitt, Chair, noted that he had not received any inquiries as to rules. The issue of the lake levels rising and falling was discussed with the reiteration that the red or yellow stakes define the hazard and that a ball in water outside the stakes due to rain/run off or what ever would be played as abnormal condition (casual water) and a free drop would be allowed.  A ball inside the stakes if on dry ground could be played ( being careful not to ground the club in the hazard).

Tom noted that April 1, 2010 would be the start of Summer Rules, playing the ball down.  Tom noted the “Basic Rule of Golf”  Tee it up, hit it until it is in the hole, and then pick it up, the only time you need to touch it after you have teed it up.  This has been expanded into a “Rules of Golf” of some 100 or so pages and then into a book of decisions some 1and ½ inches thick.

Membership:

Jack Ramos announced that we have 326 members.  Jack implored the members to make sure that he is informed of email address changes.

Handicaps:

JR Moors, Chair noted only that you should post a score if playing 14 holes or more using the esc method for completing the card.  In response to a question, JR noted that if you play a portion of a 9 hole round on the Lakes and another portion on the Oaks, i.e. 3 and 6, do not post.
