Golf Course
Jim Ferrin, Golf Course Superintendent and Director of Maintenance discussed a number of issues regarding the Golf Course: The greens are responding well from the arification and should be in top form by the 1st Tee Championship on the 11th; He will do rye grass over seeding the end of September, but this should have no impact on play; Continue to work on improving drainage in problem wet areas; The work on the front ponds id going well. Discovered that a main supply line has been leaking for probably 10 or more years and this has been repaired during the renovation; Jim noted that we are getting some $1,000,000 worth of work for approximately $270,000, a really good deal and we will be very proud of the end result. Jim noted that the Croquet Court being built at Sierra Pines will be of a professional quality and there will be none like it in the area. The Golf Courses have been rerated by the NCGA with some changes to the rating. New score cards are on order which hopefully will bring the golf course Tee Markers and yardages on the golf course into agreement. A new Tee Marker for #16 on the Oakes will be purchased to make it correct and new Tee Plaques with the yardage for each set of tees will be in place, all of this by the AAU Games. In addition, painting of the Tee Marker rocks will also be done, hopefully using some of the same experienced volunteers as did this work several years. Jim and his staff continue to work of various small areas of concern. He and his staff were thanked for the Spectacular appearance of our courses. In response to a question regarding the proper way to fix a divot, he just thank everyone that did fix there divots and the tremendous amount of work that the RAMP does for our courses.
Pro Shop
Mark Gouger, Head Golf
Professional reiterated some of what Jim Ferrin had discussed, the score cards
rerating plaques etc. In answer to a question he discussed the fact that the
NCGA does the Course Rating, but the club rates the individual holes. Mark indicated that we may want to
reverse the score cards, put the odd numbered holes on the back nine. He also indicated that odd on one nine
and even on the other is ÒtraditionÓ and if we desired we might handicap the
holes as they fall. This might take some study, but could be done. Mark then discussed some merchandizing efforts, the frequent playerÕs
coupon, a new program to start this month, and various items in the pro shop,
from GPS playerÕs assistants, books and a program to offer a $10.00 rebate on
an old shirt toward the purchase of a new one. In response to a question regarding the use of the single
rider cart, Mark noted that it has been used to some small degree, however,
more importantly it is a demonstration of our willingness to support those who
might otherwise not be able to play at all. Mark also
commented on the upcoming AAU Championships coming in October, noting that the
registration fee has been reduced and that a Calloway Shop would be set up for
purchase of Tee Prizes. Most of
all, he encouraged us to... Keep Playing and Buying!!!!!
Treasurers Report
Ray Sylvia presented the TreasurerÕs Report dated August 21, 2010 showing a total balance of $9209.10. In response to a question, Ray noted that this balance would be reduced to a balance of around $2000 by the end of the year. The Report was accepted as presented.
Hole-In-One
Paul presented a check and
hole-in-one flag to Bill AhFong, who aced #6 of the Lakes on August 3, 2010. Congratulations Bill.
Committee Reports
Club Tournaments:
Martin Wolf reporting for Ernie Bell, Chair, reported on the 3rd Annual Member/Guest September 24th and the Autumn Leaves on September 14th. Both events should be great!! Martin noted that Ernie has done some work on handicapping the individual hole. For instance, he has found that # 11 is the hardest followed by # 10 and then what might be a surprise is #13 being the 3rd hardest hole. More to come.
Travel:
Dick Maxey, Chair, stated there will be no travel l event in September due to there being so many other events
Wed Site:
Dick Maxey, Manager commented the web site is up to date, He hopes to highlight our tournaments on the site to draw more interest.
NCGA:
Bill Aaberg, Chair, reported that the Senior 4 Ball Qualifications were over and our guys did not advance. He also commented on the team matches. We did not do well. The last two events were won, by teams that just loved our greens!!!!!
Rules:
Tom Devitt, Chair, reported that there were no changes to the Rules this month. He did discuss the imbedded ball rule noting that as covered in the rule book, it applies to Òclosely moan areas, but our local rule applies to Òthrough the greenÓ not in a hazard or bunker. Tom also discussed again dropping from the flower bed across the pond to the left of the 9th tee. Not really necessary to find the ball if players agree it went in the flower bed, No penalty.
Membership:
Jack Ramos reported that we have 331 members.
Handicaps:
JR Moors, Chair, reported that everything is running along smoothly except for the continuous problem of not being able to add or subtract accurately, and getting the right players on the score card. He did report one new wrinkle, a players had posted a score from a card that he dated in October, clearly a breach of some kind.
Go Figure!
Golf Committee:
Fred Haseley is the new chair. The next meeting will be today at 2:00 pm.
Special recognition: Paul made special recognition to Roy Lloyd, Ace Reporter, (Rodger calls him Jimmy) writer of articles for the Courier and Sun Senior News, who was in the audience.
